To be an NFL quarterback, you have to be confident, even cocky. A quarterback has to believe that he's the man to lead a team down the field with 80 yards and two minutes to go.

But there are times when that confidence can be misguided, as appears to be the case for Brad Johnson if the Associated Press can be believed. The Vikings informed Johnson after the season that they had a spot for him on the roster if he wanted to serve as a veteran mentor. But according to the Associated Press, Johnson turned that down because he hopes to find a starting job elsewhere. So the Vikings cut him on Wednesday a day before free agency begins, giving him a chance to try to find that starting job.

At 38 coming off a nine touchdown, 15 interception season, Johnson will have teams who will want him as a veteran backup, but it's hard to envision any team wanting him as their starter.

According to the Star-Tribune blog, safety Will Hunter will not get a tender so he'll become a free agent while tight end Richard Owens and defensive lineman Spencer Johnson will get $850,000 tenders that allow the Vikings to match any offer but gives them no compensation if they don't match other team's offers.
