David J. Warner posted the news that Peyton Manning will host Saturday Night Live, and he mentioned the classic Joe Montana Sincere Guy Stu sketch. But while most of them haven't been as successful as Montana, several other NFL types have hosted SNL. Below are some highlights: Fran Tarkenton was the first athlete to host SNL, and he participated in a skit called Black Perspective in which he discussed the fact that the NFL at the time had no black starting quarterbacks. It might have seemed funny in 1977, but reading the transcript 30 years later, I find it cringe-inducing.
O.J. Simpson wore a conehead during his monologue in 1978. He later earned the distinction of having been the only living former host who wasn't invited back for the 25th anniversary special in 1999.
John Madden hosted in 1982. Brent Musberger made a cameo in a skit called "Bengals Locker Room."
Deion Sanders hosted in 1995 and performed his classic song, "Must Be The Money." Not sure what Lorne Michaels was thinking when he approved that one.
Tom Brady hosted in 2005, and taught us that the three rules for avoiding sexual harassment complaints at the office are Be Handsome, Be Attractive, and Don't Be Unattractive.
Can Peyton Manning top those five? Tune in on March 24 to find out.
