Apparently beyond center field at Yankee Stadium won't be the only place to find everlasting images of franchise icons. As noted in the San Diego Union Tribune (via Ben Maller)

The Padres plan to unveil a statue of Hall of Famer-elect Tony Gwynn at Petco Park on July 21.

Not a bad year for Tony -- immortalized with a plaque in Cooperstown and now a freakin' statue in Petco Park.

The accolade is well-deserved and I couldn't be happier for Gwynn. Tony represents everything positive about the game of baseball -- he spent 20 years all with the same team which makes the back of his baseball card look pretty sweet. Plus, the dude was a career .338 hitter, five-time Gold Glove winner, and a straight up baller for San Diego St.'s basketball team. Nice to see the Padres and the city of San Diego properly honor the man who never left to cash in on free-agency.

Thanks to MJD who has an uncanny taste in photos.
