Don't buy those L.A. Galaxy season tickets just yet. David Beckham had to be helped off with a knee injury during the second half of Real Madrid's 1-1 draw against Getafe today. Jose Antonio Reyes also injured his knee, and neither will play in the next game at Bayern Munich.
"They will not face Bayern," said coach Fabio Capello. "Reyes's injury is bad; Beckham's could be just as serious."
Although it's too early to know the extent of this injury, it's a reminder of how precarious a strategy it is to base an entire league's marketing on one player, as the MLS has done. If the entire sales pitch of MLS this year is "we've got Beckham," they'd better be sure they actually have Beckham. And since life is unpredictable and all, they can never be completely sure. As much as the acquisition of Beckham seems like it could be a pot of gold for MLS, it could actually be counterproductive if things don't go as planned.
