As Shoals mentioned this morning, Boston's Al Jefferson is turning awesome before our eyes. On cue, Jefferson followed up his silly Saturday 32 & 18 line with 20 and 14 against Minnesota Sunday morning as the Celtics won their fourth straight (!).
What's gotten into Big Al? His PER of 18.5 is the best of his career, despite Jefferson's scoring sitting at levels similar to a year ago. The biggest improvement in Al's game has been his rebounding - his rebound rate this season is 20.0 - behind only Dwight Howard, David Lee, and Tyson Chandler.
The visceral jump in Jefferson's other per-game numbers can be explained fully by his increased minutes. Whether Al's defense is better or not, Doc Rivers has lengthened the leash and Jefferson is playing an average of 32 minutes a game instead of last year's 18. Thus, his scoring has jumped from 8 to 15 ppg while the rate at which he takes shots and the clip at which he shoots have remained level.
But the rebounding - there's serious improvement there. Karl Malone never had a rebound rate higher than 17.4. Tim Duncan's career best is 19.4. Obviously, Jefferson isn't as skilled a defender as either all-time great, and his scoring touch is at least a few furlongs behind.
But for a 22-year-old who has yet to play with a decent team - he's going to get scary good scary quick.
(Pau who?)
