Yesterday, the FanHouse's Michael David Smith wrote that Randy Moss, a popular subject of trade speculation, probably wouldn't be moved because of his age, declining numbers, and potential salary-cap implications. Well, that didn't slow up the rumor mill. Here's the latest from Tampa Bay: The Raiders have not responded to the speculation [that the Bucs might be interested in Moss], but it wasn't long after the report surfaced Wednesday that football pundits began suggesting this might explain why the league has yet to receive Plummer's retirement papers.Yeah, and that's a pretty big hole too. Presumably, Plummer is retiring because he doesn't want to be a backup. If he ends up in Oakland -- even if the team drafts JaMarcus Russell -- Plummer would be the starter by default, at least for next season.
With the Raiders in the market for a quarterback, there was talk in league circles that the Bucs might try to make Plummer part of a deal for Moss. The hole in that theory, of course, is Plummer's supposed retirement plans.
It's still not clear why Tampa Bay traded for Plummer and then signed Jeff Garcia to a two-year deal. If the club could somehow parlay that curious personnel decision into Randy Moss, well, I'd be impressed. Of course, there is no guarantee that the 2007 Randy Moss will be anything close to the pre-Raiders Randy Moss.
