When Chris Simon cheap shotted Ryan Hollweg last night, it served as an ugly reminder of another black eye for the NHL, coming three years to the day after the cheap shot that Todd Bertuzzi of the Vancouver Canucks delivered to Steve Moore of the Colorado Avalanche. Hollweg was lucky: He just needed some stitches on his chin. Moore's injury was far, far worse. Three years later, he still can't play. Although he says he's getting better, he adds that doctors haven't cleared him for any physical contact because of post-concussion symptoms:
"They're things like headaches, lethargy and trouble focusing, and feeling a sort of light-headedness, especially later in the day, like things are in slow motion."
Moore is suing Bertuzzi and the Canucks organization. Moore says he still plans a return to the NHL some day, but that doesn't seem realistic at this point: How many players can return to form after a three-year layoff for any reason, let alone a three-year layoff because of a brain injury?
It's time for the NHL to get these thugs off the ice.
