The Padres pulled Greg Maddux from his scheduled start against the White Sox on Monday, deciding to be cautious with the forty year-old pitcher who felt a slight strain in his side."He would have been available during the season, but why push it on March 12?" San Diego manager Bud Black said.Of course Black is right on here -- you never want to force a pitcher into action and risk further damage to a spring training injury. But this news HAS to be concerning for Padres fans.
Maddux turns 41 next month and it's widely known that he keeps a strict pitch count. In fact, Maddux's pitch count has become so limiting recently that he was held out of a six inning no-hitter following a rain delay last year. Long gone are the days Maddux could throw a complete game. How soon before Maddux is unable to make 30 starts?
Looking at the bright side, at least now he has more time on his hands to pee on rookies.
