JaMarcus Russell Impresses NFL Scouts at LSU Pro Day

All 32 NFL teams had at least one scout in Baton Rouge today to watch LSU's pro day, and quarterback JaMarcus Russell didn't disappoint. The analyst Mike Mayock of NFL Network called it "a really good day for JaMarcus Russell," and he's looking more likely than ever to be the first overall pick in the draft. Russell had dinner with Raiders officials last night, but he must not have eaten much: He weighed in at 256 pounds, meaning he's slimmed down a bit in the last month.

But Russell wasn't the only reason scouts were there. Although they're obviously not going to draft Russell, the Saints sent 30 representatives to watch LSU's other prospects. Might New Orleans be interested in a player like wide receiver Dwayne Bowe? If so, the Saints would have to trade up to draft him in the first round. Bowe ran a 4.40-second 40-yard dash and should be a Top 20 pick.

Safety LaRon Landry, who showed good speed at the combine, didn't run the 40. He did run the 20-yard shuttle, and he ran a poor time (4.36 seconds), which might have a few teams questioning whether he has quickness commensurate with his straight-line speed. But that probably won't have a big impact on his draft stock; Landry is still a likely Top 10 pick.

One name to keep an eye on is Landry's fellow safety, Jessie Daniels. Daniels' 40 time was a decent 4.54 and his 20-yard shuttle time of 4.25 seconds might have opened a few eyes. As a second-day pick, Daniels should be able to contribute immediately on special teams. Overall 19 LSU players worked out, and it's likely that about 10 of them will be drafted.
