The Vikings are addressing their wide receiver problems, but the biggest problem in Minnesota has been that the team used the seventh pick in the draft on Troy Williamson two years ago, and he hasn't produced. Williamson's draft stock skyrocketed when he ran a blistering 40-yard dash, but now the Vikings have discovered that all the speed in the world doesn't do much good if a receiver can't catch the ball, and STATS Inc. listed Williamson as having 11 drops last year, third-most in the league. That might sound like a problem with his hands, but it actually might be a problem with his eyes. Early last season Williamson's agent approached the team and suggested that he might have some vision problems, and recently he went through a series of eye tests. The upshot is that there are non-surgical procedures that can improve his ability to see the ball.
I'm a little skeptical that Williamson will ever become a good enough player to be worth the seventh pick in the draft, but if he can see better, he can play better. I'm actually a little surprised vision tests like this aren't a more common part of evaluating every player.
