On a day that his Florida Gators were invited to visit the White House to celebrate their national championship in football, Urban Meyer downplayed his team's chances to repeat in 2007, according to the Miami Herald:''We're not a good team,'' Meyer said. "We're in a little bit of a train wreck right now. We have, I think, seven seniors. And then I believe there's eight juniors. That's awful.''
Because of his team's youth, Meyer said Florida is a long shot to repeat as national champion.
''I wish I could stand up here and say that we can make another run at this title,'' Meyer said. "I don't know. I have no idea but it's so farfetched.''
Ok, so Meyer's faux humility is cute in its own way. But I have a hard time mustering sympathy for a team coming off of a national championship and reloading with recruiting classes that have ranked in the top three each of the last two years. Are the Gators young, unproven, and raw? Yes, of course, and certainly. But they also have enough talent stockpiled to keep the idea of a repeat run in the realm of possibility.
And "train wreck" is a bit over the top, isn't it?
