On Wednesday night for the Dodgers. Penny complained of shoulder stiffness after tossing a bullpen session on Monday -- luckily an MRI showed no structural damage.
Penny gave the typical 'it's only spring training' response as his reason for missing the start:
"I just don't want to go into the season not feeling 100 percent," said Penny. "If this was the regular season, I wouldn't miss it. It's just a little stiff and I don't want it to progress and get any worse and affect the next start."
Sure that makes sense, and luckily for Dodger fans, manager Grady Little isn't acting worried.
"We're probably being overcautious, but we can afford that with the time we have," said Little. "The training staff doesn't think it's serious. If it doesn't bother him in his last two starts, he should be good to go for the regular season."
Given Penny's horrid spring -- 10 earned runs and 17 hits over seven innings for a 12.86 ERA -- there is certainly cause for concern in Chavez Ravine. After all, Penny had a 6.25 ERA after the All-Star break last year -- the same year in which he
started the All-Star game for the NL.
