Wells pitched in a minor league game on Friday -- his first appearance since publicly revealing the news that he has diabetes. The fat boy (is it still OK to call him that anymore?) threw five scoreless innings, allowing five hits while walking one and striking out five. Before you do a beer bong in his honor, let it be known that Wells was throwing for the Padres Double A team against their Triple A team. Word has it the batters were taking it easy on David in his state of emotional fragility -- if they actually tried, they might have sent Wells sulking home to inevitably blow his diet.
The Padres official site says Wells is on schedule to appear in a game on Wednesday. The remaining question is whether or not it will be against a bunch of sympathetic Triple A hitters, or the Royals. Which I guess is the same thing minus the sympathy factor.
