Could the Detroit Lions really take a wide receiver with a top 10 pick in the NFL draft for the fourth time in five years? Tom Kowalski, the Lions beat writer for Michigan Live, says that although Lions president Matt Millen wants to trade down, he'll stay put and take wide receiver Calvin Johnson if he doesn't get a trade offer he likes. I honestly don't think that's as crazy as it sounds. Yes, it's bizarre to spend so many high picks on one position, but one of the Lions' previous choices (Charles Rogers) is already gone, and another (Mike Williams) spends more energy eating than practicing. The costs devoted to Rogers and Williams are already sunk.
Johnson was great at Georgia Tech and great at the combine, and he's widely regarded as the best player at any position in this draft. If the Lions consider him the best player, and he's on the board when their pick comes up, should they really allow the fact that Rogers and Williams didn't pan out to dissuade them?
Having said that, I think the Lions will trade down. After the Raiders make their pick (most likely taking LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell), some team will like the available players enough to give the Lions a nice package for the second pick. It's only in the unlikely event that no team makes them an offer that the Lions would stay put.
