I was traveling on the weekend and happened to pick up this month's issue of Esquire at the newsstand. In it I found a feature on baseball's newest highest paid pitcher, penned by the always-excellent Chris Jones. The focus of the piece is on Barry Zito's free agency in 2006, and the enormous role his agent Scott Boras played in the negotiations. When the newest Giant visited Boras' office and saw the super agent's War Room (which actually has 'War Room' written on its door, and a bunch of eager lawyers inside it), featuring a computer with an enormous database documenting every pitch thrown since 1971 and the ability to pin-point why Zito should command top dollar, it left quite an impression on the 28 year old pitcher.
"They definitely heightened my expectations of myself," Zito says. "I was actually kind of aroused."Because I know you're dying to know, the 'aroused' Barry Zito has bamboo sticks, a book on Sandy Koufax, a portrait of Koufax, and a framed photo of legendary guitarist Carlos Santana (who Zito claims gives off the "best vibes") on his bed's headboard. For more Zito zaniness, you'll have to pick up the April edition of Esquire.
