If you were going to rank the 32 NFL teams in order of how likely they are to draft a quarterback in the first round of this year's draft, several teams would rank as less likely than the Washington Redskins -- certainly New Orleans, New England, Indianapolis and Cincinnati are all happy at quarterback, and Tennessee, Arizona, Denver and San Francisco all have young first-round picks already on the roster. But still, the Redskins are highly unlikely to take a quarterback this year, considering that they used a first-round pick on Jason Campbell in 2005, and he played fairly well when he got the starting job midway through the 2006 season. So what are the Redskins doing talking to LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell?
One possibility is that they legitimately want to draft Russell, which would probably require trading up, maybe all the way up to the first overall pick. Another possibility is that they're looking to create the impression that they're considering taking a quarterback in the hopes that creating that impression will make their own pick look more attractive if they try to trade it.
A final possibility is that they're trying to send a message to Campbell, and that's the one I'm going with. This sounds like the type of subtle reminder teams like to give to young players sometimes, just to let them know that everyone in the NFL is replaceable. If Campbell thinks he has the starting quarterback job for 2007 in the bag, perhaps seeing his team talking to another quarterback will make him work just a little bit harder.
