If the Montreal Canadiens narrowly miss making the playoffs this year, they may look back and curse Ottawa Senators goaltender Ray Emery for their misfortune.Emery, playing in his 100th career NHL game last night, beat the desperate Habs 5-2, marking the fifth time this season that the 24-year-old Ottawa netminder has defeated Le Bleu, Blanc et Rouge. By doing so, the Cayuga, Ontario native became the first goaltender to beat Montreal five times in one season since Boston's Pete Peeters did it all the way back in 1983-84 [amazing side note: current Detroit Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios actually played a dozen games for that Canadiens team].
Despite starting the season as a backup to free agent acquisition Martin Gerber, Emery has posted impressive numbers across the board (a 32-15-5 record, 2.48 goals against average and .918 save percentage), buoyed by his 5-2-0 record, 2.42 GAA and .922 save percentage against Les Canadiens.
For his career, Emery, a fourth-round pick in 2001, is now 8-5-0 with a 2.76 GAA and a .908 save percentage against Montreal.
