With all of the negative hockey images the mainstream media has shown over the past few weeks, it's important to get out the positive ones as well, and few are more positive than this.While on a business trip in the Middle East, Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk stopped off to visit Canadian and U.S. troops stationed in Afghanistan, and he didn't show up empty-handed -- Melnyk brought with him $50,000 worth of hockey equipment (pads, sticks and jerseys) for the troops.
Playing and watching ball hockey is an important ritual for some of the more than 2,000 Canadian troops in Afghanistan [as this three-year-old file photo shows], with the teams playing for the Kandahar Cup, a pint-sized version of Lord Stanley's coveted trophy.For those of you keeping score at home, the Canadian team waxed the U.S. squad 9-0,but the playoffs don't begin until next month, so the Yanks have some time yet to right the ship. Perhaps a generous American owner can send over a new goalie for the Team USA. Come to think of it, I hear Robert Esche is looking for work....
