Recently I presented the report that Derek Lowe's ex-wife, Trinka, was the reason for another marriage being broken up. I was pretty incensed over the news in the report, writing that Trinka was most likely a hypocrite. But a new twist to the Derek Lowe/Carolyn Hughes/Trinka Lowe story came up in the LA Times on Monday. The following anecdote and quote from Dodgers' pitcher Derek Lowe makes me rethink the title of the original post I made on this topic:A few weeks ago, somebody taped a newspaper article detailing a purported affair between Lowe's ex-wife and married German soccer star Stefan Effenberg to Lowe's spring-training locker. He kept it there until the Dodgers left Vero Beach, Fla., as if to validate that there were two sides to the story of his breakup, more to it than the pervasive impression that he and Hughes were home wreckers.Wow, that's an interesting spin. I guess nobody truly knows what went on with each marriage except for the involved parties, but this certainly seems to indicated that Lowe and Hughes weren't as slimy as originally portrayed, and that Trinka wasn't deserving of the type of sympathy people gave her.
...
"No one in their right mind would leave their family for a fling," Lowe said. "Our relationship had nothing to do with either Carolyn or I getting divorces. Those were already in the works. We decided to be with each other and no one broke up anybody's marriage."
Lowe goes on to say that all the family and personal issues that season distracted him from his play on the field, resulting in him giving up a career worst 28 home runs. I have to think that probably is the case for any player going through off-field personal issues.
