Somewhere in the on-line world of Everquest, there is a low-level wizard getting his ass kicked by an angry Curt Schilling.
Four innings, eight hits, two walks - including one with bases loaded - and five earned runs. Not the linescore you want to see from your self-proclaimed ace. Schill was in trouble from the start, and with the exception of the 1-2-3 third inning, looked terrible. Light-hitting, 185-pound Tony Pena Jr. took him to the wall for a triple on a splitter left hanging over the plate. Schilling threw 55 pitches for strikes, but they were mostly hittable strikes, not the pitcher's strikes we're used to seeing.
Curt looked every minute of his 40 years of age. A couple days growth of beard and bag under his eyes, Schilling just did not look comfortable or focused. He's never fared well in KC, now 1-3 at Kaufman Stadium.
Schilling had a tumultuous off-season. He was denied a contract extension by the Red Sox, perhaps the trigger for Schilling changing the name of his gaming company from Green Monster Games to 38 Studios. He spent many an interview explaining why he, not Dice-K Matsuzaka, is the ace of the team and should be the opening day starter. Most recently, he started his own BLOG, 38 Pitches, prompting a playful exchange with Boston Globe writer Dan Shaughnessy .
Here's a thought Curt: Pay more attention to baseball! On-line games, gaming companies, BLOGs...all great hobbies. But not when you're not doing your day job. And you might wanna cut back on the desserts...
