Fire Billy Packer

That is the sentiment this year. I know I wouldn't mind seeing him put out to pasture. This year, though, the distaste for Packer seems to be hitting a new high (though, not for everyone). I don't know if this a cyclical thing or just that as more people are voicing their opinion -- especially as more and more people blogged and commented on the games (and the announcers). The long-standing distaste many have for Packer, is being expressed more and more.

The latest furor over Billy Packer's "fag out" comment seems as much about the hope that this is the chance to finally have Packer fired. Deadspin Commenter, Kathleen Turner Overdrive, may have put it best:
Firing Billy Packer for a very un-PC statement is like putting Al Capone behind bars for tax evasion. Not the worst thing he's ever done but we'll take it!
Here's the problem. Packer has said tons of dumb, insensitive, moronic, tone deaf, questionable, and just plain wrong things over his entire public career. The one consistent aspect has been the lack of a particular theme. If he had a history of making comments that seem to target a particular racial, religious, sexist, sexual orientation viewpoint it would be one thing. Packer, however, has been scattershot with his stupidity.

He's been doing it for so long and without any pattern other then to offend everyone. It fits his general image as a cantankerous, old, crank. It oddly minimizes the impact of how many wrong things he says outside of basketball. He gets treated as a coot and a general jerk, but no one really takes him seriously. All of this happens without making anyone at CBS consider that if he keeps being so consistently wrong on things he says outside of the analyst box, maybe it is impacting his credibility as an analyst.
