Darryl Stingley, the New England Patriots wide receiver who was paralyzed from the neck down during a 1978 preseason game, has died at the age of 55. The Chicago native and former Purdue star was pronounced dead this morning at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. No cause of death has been released.Stingley played five seasons in the NFL. He became a quadriplegic when Oakland Raiders safety Jack Tatum delivered a violent hit on a pass over the middle.
Stingley's son Derek Stingley is the coach of the Macon Knights of Arena Football.
