A very interesting moment took place out in Anaheim a few minutes ago. With the Ducks and Sharks heading into OT tied 2-2 with a Ducks power play due to carry over into the extra period, Sharks head coach Ron Wilson asked the refs to measure the width of Teemu Selanne's stick. Now this isn't the first time I've seen a stick measured in OT, but every other time I've seen it done the problem was the curvature of the stick. Selanne got a two-minute minor penalty, forcing the team's to start the OT skating 3-on-3.
From the NHL Rule Book:
The blade of the stick shall not be more than three inches (3") in width at any point nor less than two inches (2"). All edges of the blade shall be beveled.Of course, Wilson was Selanne's head coach when he was previously head coach in Anaheim. You have to think he was hiding that info in his back pocket for the right time. Though the Sharks didn't capitalize on the brief power play they enjoyed in the OT thanks to Wilson's gambit, they did eventually prevail, 3-2, after a shootout.
