In the picture, the final pairing of Tiger Woods and Stuart Appleby is preparing for the final round of the Masters. And on CBS, Woods and Appleby were on the fourth hole before the first commercial break. CBS's Masters coverage began at 2:30 p.m. Eastern, and the first commercial wasn't televised until 3:10. There's no other major sporting event that can come close to matching the Masters in terms of the ratio of action we get to see compared to commercial time: 56 minutes of every hour is golf, with just four minutes for commercials.
And for that, we have the folks at Augusta National to thank. They insist on a television contract with minimal commercial interruptions, saying they'd rather have a "less is more" approach. They know they could make more money with more commercials, but they're OK with that.
I dislike some things about Augusta National -- especially its men-only policy -- but I do love to watch the Masters without being bombarded by ads.
