I'll leave the game recaps to the professionals, but here are some random thoughts and stats about tonight's Game One Senators win that the mainstream journos might not get to:- The game was a blowout, nowhere near as tight as the final score, but would have been worse if the Sens had cashed in on either of two lengthy 5-on-3 power play opportunities.
- In my series preview, I asked, "If the kid struggles, will Coach Michel Therrien go to Joselyn Thibault?" I guess we have our answer, though I'd be shocked if Marc-Andre Fleury wasn't back in between the pipes to start Game Two.
- If Blur gets royalties for every time "Song 2" is played (you know... the "woo hoo" song), they were loving this game.
- Pens blueliner Mark Eaton blocked a Mutombo-esque eight shots on goal
- Pittsburgh's faceoffs, with the exception of Sidney Crosby (who won 65% of his draws), were horrific, with Evgeni Malkin, Jordan Staal, Erik Christensen and Maxime Talbot combining to go 13-for-49 (27%). On the flip side of the draws, Mike Fisher and Antoine Vermette were a combined 32-for-46 (70%) for Ottawa. Keep an eye on this going forward.
- Even with his late power play assist, Evgeni Malkin was largely invisible, registering neither a shot on goal nor a hit. He was also 2-for-18 on faceoffs (including 1-for-14 against Fisher and Vermette), which is obviously ridiculously bad.
- Pitt's Sergei Gonchar had 13:45 of ice-time on the power play alone.
- Sens captain Daniel Alfredsson came out and led by example, taking two more shots on goal in the first period than the entire Penguins team (six to four).
- Michel Ouellet finished the game with a plus-1 rating, the only Pen in the black. Well done, Michel.
- Luggage Express, one of the lead corporate sponsors for the Versus telecast, has www.866shipbags.com as the URL for its website. Maybe I'm a bit immature (maybe?), but I find that riotously funny.
