Is Colby Armstrong a Dirty Hitter?

If you ever find yourself on the ice wearing a different colored sweater than that of Pittsburgh's Colby Armstrong, do yourself a favor and keep your head up, especially when circling the opponent's net.

Patrick Eaves failed to heed that advice in last night's game and got knocked into the next round of the playoffs by Armstrong (I'm not here to pass judgment on the legality of the hit, but in case you're curious, the NHL Rulebook defines charging as "the actions of a player who, as a result of distance traveled, shall violently check an opponent in any manner").

The good folks at Battle of Ontario point out that there is a bit of a pattern developing here with Mr. Armstrong (full video evidence after the jump), and for a player who isn't necessarily known as a banger (he was 224th in the League in hits this season), he has dished out an awful lot of hurt-per-hit.

So here's the evidence, all from this season. First his hit on Eaves, then one on the Habs' Saku Koivu, one on Philly's Jeff Carter (at about the one minute mark of the clip) and finally one on the Canes' Trevor Letowski.

You be the judge -- is Colby Armstrong a dirty hitter?
