A couple of weeks ago, Roush Racing announced that Greg Biffle's AmeriQuest sponsorship will be heading out the door after Homestead in November. The mortgage company has fallen on some hard times, and so the Roush Fenway Racing team is on the prowl for a new sponsor the 16 car.At the same time, NASCAR informed Roush that the four-team limit that had been floated around for a few years is finally going to come into effect for the 2009 season.
So who does that leave out from the five-team Roush stable? A preliminary guess has Biffle being the easiest driver for Roush to move because his contract is up in after 2008.
"If Smith can get Biffle to sign, that could put him in the driver's seat for sponsorship with the top open man in the series. However, rivals are certain to try to find something to lure Biffle away."
Biffle would definitely be an enticing driver for many owners in the garage -- especially after his fantastic 2005 season. The team struggled last year and made a crew chief change, and this year has started off much the same. Biffle sits 17th in points right now after posting his second top 10 of the year at Texas. He's averaging a 20th-place finish in the 2007 campaign.
With Jamie McMurray starting to show signs of great improvment, Matt Kenseth leading the team, Carl Edwards still the happy-go-lucky teammate, and young David Ragan being the future at Roush -- it seems that Biffle could be a viable candidate to drive for a team that he serves more of a leading role in.
It's pretty tough to leave the security of Roush, however.
Interesting situation, I say.
