How Does 'Philip Rivers to Calvin Johnson' Sound?

The FanHouse's Adam Rank thinks Michael Turner could be the Chargers' MVP in 2007, but I don't know if that will be enough to keep him in San Diego. While the rumor spigot has slowed to a dribble recently, the San Diego Union-Tribune's Jim Trotter puts forth an interesting idea: Trade Turner, takes the picks acquired in the trade -- likely a first- and third-rounder -- and use them to move up in the draft to select Calvin Johnson or LaRon Landry.

Trotter does all the NFL Value Chart math, but the only way the Chargers get Johnson is if they move up to No. 2. Granted, wide receiver is a BIG need for San Diego, but with a relatively deep draft class, I'm not sure even Johnson is worth the cost of moving up 28 spots (Philip Rivers might disagree).

Landry, on the other hand, is much more attainable. San Diego could move up to No. 8 by trading their two first-round picks, and Landry should still be available. Again, though, there are two or three safeties who could be had for something less than what it would take to nab Landry. Yeah, both Landry and Johnson are miles better than their contemporaries, but ultimately, it comes down to general manager A.J. Smith thinking either player is worth the cost. And, of course, he'll need to find a team willing to meet the Chargers' trade demands for Turner.
