NFL Fines Brian Urlacher $100,000 for Wearing Hat
OK, it's more than just wearing a hat. It's wearing a hat specifically for the purpose of promoting a vitamin water that Urlacher has an endorsement deal to hawk, when the NFL has an exclusive deal with Gatorade. The league says the standard fine for such offenses is just $10,000 in the regular season, but it jumps up to $100,000 for the Super Bowl. (It's $50,000 for the Pro Bowl, although I don't think anyone pays close enough attention to the Pro Bowl to notice such things.)
There's one very obvious question that has gone unanswered in all this: How much did the vitamin water company pay Urlacher to wear the hat? If it's more than $100,000, I expect he'll plan to do the same thing if the Bears get back to the Super Bowl next year.
