The NBA culture of tattoos is something that we at the FanHouse usually find fascinating. In this case, however, we find it hilarious. This isn't exactly breaking news, but it's definitely something that deserves a second look. Shawn Marion's tattoo of Chinese lettering on his right leg apparently has a different meaning than the one he intended, so says the people at Hanzi Smatter:
The three "Chinese lettering" Mr. Marion sporting does not really translate as "The Matrix" in Chinese.
[1st character] = demon, evil spirits; magic power
[2nd character]= bird
[3rd character] = camphor (a plant where its chemical exact is used for making moth balls)
Although, this tattoo could be a Japanese phonetic translation of "The Matrix", many Chinese-speaking fans would probably snicker at Shawn "Demon Bird Moth Balls" Marion.
I don't know about you, but if I'm ready to get some permanent ink of a phrase in a foreign language, I'm going to use something a little more reliable than say, BabelFish to make sure I'm getting the proper translation.
