I guess general acts of unruliness aren't limited to just Red Sox and Dodgers fans: Tony La Russa felt compelled on Wednesday to ask stadium security to intervene with a couple of rude fans in San Francisco. From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:Cardinals manager Tony La Russa had security personnel remove some abusive rowdies who had targeted Scott Spiezio from behind the visitors dugout Wednesday night at AT&T Park, and there no were incidents Thursday afternoon. If the fans were inspired by Spiezio's chin-goatee- stripe-thing, then come on, he's kind of getting what he deserves, no? Wearing that thing and taking offense when people laugh at you is just plain illogical. More than likely, though, the hatred probably stems from Spiezio's role in helping the Angels beat the Giants in the 2002 World Series. If that's the case, man, get over it, because if you thought the Barry Bonds backlash is bad now, just imagine what it'd be like if he actually had a ring.
La Russa said that he is accustomed to hearing unflattering comments in visiting ballparks but that Wednesday's abuse was over the top.
"It was extremely loud and extremely vulgar," he said. "I thought it went beyond the pale, so I got security involved. I hear things here and there all the time. But this was too much." ...
[Said Speizio,] "I get it here all the time. I'm sure it's nothing I haven't heard before, but I guess it got pretty bad."
