I've been thinking about this, and wondered: Has any team ever been immediately second guessed and mocked as much as the Texans have over their first pick last year? Much of the national media thought the Texans should take Reggie Bush, and most of the locals wanted Vince Young. The Texans front office is still publicly fine with who they chose, but I am imagining that most Texan fans don't ever want another draft controversy like the top pick of 2006.
In 2007, the Texans need tons of help throughout the team, but there are some draft scenarios that could end up giving Texans fans some extra heartburn:
1. Passing on Adrian Peterson. If Adrian Peterson is somehow available at #10, like he is shown in some mock drafts, and the Texans pass on him, the fanbase will howl. The Texans still need defensive tackle and a pass rushing end even though the Texans have chosen defensive linemen in the first round of the last three drafts. Texans fans are starved for an exciting first round pick, and passing on Peterson might make it feel like another brussel spouts over steak draft.
2. Passing on Levi Brown. Some fans believe the best upgrade to the Texans offensive line in the off season wasn't signing free agent taclke Jordan Black, but rather replacing David Carr with another quarterback who might make the line look better. That being said, I can't fathom too many teams in the league that would want to trade offensive lines with the Texans. The Texans left tackle position seems to have been jinxed over the years, and the Texans would love for this position not to be a perennial need.
3. Giving Up Picks for Matt Schaub. If Matt Schaub is the quarterback that the Texans think he is, well then, everything is sunshine, chocolate, flowers and sonnets for Texans fans. If he ends up being a less mobile version of David Carr, then the fanbase will mourn the loss of two spots in the first round, and a second round pick this year and next for him. For years, the fanbase will pick and chose in hindsight other players the Texans could have had if they didn't trade for Schaub.
Any other nasty draft scenarios you can think of? If I've frightened you too badly, hang out here a while.
