My counterpart R said it the other day, but it bears repeating: is Alex Rodriguez already the AL MVP?

Too early, too early, I know, but this tear alone is enough to keep him in the discussion through the end of the year, even if his production comes back down to Earth for the next couple of months.

Rodriguez hit two more home runs tonight vs. the Devil Rays, giving him his 13th and 14th of the year and making him the first player in the history of baseball (!) to hit 14 home runs in the first 18 games of a season.

Yes, it's April. Yes, A-Rod will have to do this late in the season to truly prove himself. But with his team's pitching staff in shambles and his shortstop teammate continuing to struggle, Rodriguez has singlehandedly kept his team from totally tanking the beginning of this season. We'll see how far that success can carry the Yankees if they can get everyone back on track.

Maybe, just maybe, they won't give up 10 runs to the Devil Rays. Now that would be a start.
