Philip HughesDesperate times call for desperate measures: as a result of roughly 43 injuries in their starting rotation, the Yankees have decided to call up stud prospect Philip Hughes to start Thursday's game. Is it a panic move or smart decision? Actually ... it's probably both.

Yes, the Yankees were hoping to keep him in the minors for much of the year, but the Yankees were also expecting to have Mike Mussina and Carl Pavano in their starting rotation, as well. Hughes flat-out dominated hitters in Double-A last year (2.25 ERA, 138 strikeouts in 116 innings) and he's been nearly as good at Triple-A this season, bouncing back from a rough second start to strike out 10 over six scoreless innings in his last outing.

What's the point in letting guys like Jeff Karstens and Chase Wright keep taking the mound when all they're going to do is overwork an already suspect bullpen? Right now, the Yanks aren't looking past one start -- they hope Mussina will return from the DL in time to start on May 3 -- but if Hughes pitches well you have to figure the team will at least consider the idea of letting him replace Kei Igawa, who's been more or less horrible in four starts.
