After mildly injuring the area around his right rib cage Monday in a game against Kansas City, Jim Thome tweaked it again last night in Chicago' s 7-3 win against the Angels. And, it appears as if he's likely headed to the DL."This was like someone jabbed you," said Thome, speaking in front of his locker after the team's fifth victory in 10 home games this season. "So, it was a different feeling in that way."Thome currently leads the Sox in batting average at .340 and is tied for the lead in home runs with five, so I'd say this is a tough lost for Chicago, especially considering the AL Central is still very much up for grabs. (Well, maybe the Royals are already at of it.) At 36, Thome may still be a productive offensive force, but he's certainly not getting any younger.
Both Thome and Ozzie Guillen expressed a desire to reevaluate the recurrence of Thome's rib cage injury on Saturday, but the White Sox manager already has Plan B firmly in mind. Thome appears to be headed to the disabled list, giving him a couple of weeks of nothing but treatment in order to let the injury fully heal.
We'll see if Chicago can stay in the Al Central mix without its power hitter in the coming weeks.
