First, the good news: the Redskins will have the best safety tandem on the planet. Unfortunately, Washington didn't address their pass rush and they don't pick again until tomorrow afternoon. Given that the defensive-line depth in this draft is pretty weak, there's, oh, about a zero-percent chance the Redskins address that need this weekend.
Safety, on the other hand, is pretty deep. But instead of taking an d-linemen, the Vinny Cerrato All Stars took the top-rated safety. I shouldn't be surprised ... but I am. LaRon Landry is a monster, and he and Sean Taylor will probably be great together ... but what about the pass rush?
I guess head coach-defense Gregg Williams has faith that the pass coverage will improve a million percent and the pass rush will take care of itself. That's a lot of faith. Also, one of the concerns with Landry is that isn't an on-field-coach type of player. Don't misunderstand, he's a smart dude, great talent, and one of the best players in the draft, but Taylor excels when he can just run fast and hit people. If he has to think about what he's doing, you get the 2006 season. Former 'Skins safety Ryan Clark was Taylor's on-field eyes and ears in 2004 and 2005. It's not clear Landry can fill that void. If he can, though, then that's one less thing the Redskins have to worry about.
To be fair, Hogs Haven is cool with the pick, and barring a trade down, many 'Skins fans considered Landry the second-best option. Duly noted.
