Well, at least he didn't before Game 4. Nowitzki was asked if he was worried about being down two games to one against the upstart Warriors, and here's what he had to say:
"I wouldn't say we're worried, but our backs are against the wall. If we lose [Game 4], this season is pretty much over."
Um, as a Mavs' fan, those aren't exactly the words I was hoping to hear from our supposed team leader and "MVP candidate." Look, I know the Warriors have been ridiculously good at home, but Dallas does have two of the next three (I know, if necessary) in their building, so don't they still have a fighting chance here? Maybe not.
Mavs Moneyball is quick to point out that in the same situation last year, Phoenix was able to use their two home games to crawl out of the 3-1 hole and come back to take down the Lakers in seven. While I'm sure this is simply a case of looking for anything positive in Mavs-land right now, I'm not sure if Dallas can get all the way back in this series.
The Mavericks will almost certainly get Game 5 at home, but after being outscored last night 22-11 to end the game and blowing an 88-80 fourth quarter lead, I have no confidence in their ability to win in Golden State Oakland. Unless Dirk can start scoring again and Dallas can play much better team defense than they have the first four games, I'm afraid that Dirk's pre-game assessment may just turn out to be correct.
