The Inevitable "Is Dirk Still MVP" Post

Usually, the MVP gets his trophy in the second round. But today, the Dallas Morning News' Mavericks Blog speculates that Dirk might get his this week so that it doesn't seem too tainted. Which brings up the question we're all wondering about: taking this series into account, is GM's choice Dirk still the MVP?

The easy answer is the right one. it's based on regular season, because taking the postseason into account would penalize non-playoff stars. What I'm wondering, though, is how often someone gets MVP consideration without making the playoffs. Technically, it's not a requirement. But not making the postseason is a major setback for would-be MVP's. With the criteria awfully vague, and the race always close, this seems to be the one clear-cut requirement.

If it's an unspoken standard for MVP candidates, though, why can't playoffs be taken into account? I'm not proposing that the Finals MVP get the regular season MVP. That would be ridiculous. But what tells you more about a player then the playoffs? Not every team can make it to mid-June, but why not take into account at least the first round? If making the playoffs is an informal must, looking at first round performances isn't that much of a stretch.
