If you're standing up, sit down and prepare to have your mind blown. Several million Americans participate in something called Second Life, a virtual universe in which you decide your appearance, give yourself wings or whatever, and then spend real money. You can also make virtual money that can then be converted into real money. It's such a big deal that Presidential candidate John Edwards has "set up shop" there. Before you going thinking he's super-innovative, know that he's just following in the footsteps of one-time Presidential hopeful Mark Warner.
From Sports By Brooks comes the news that the National Basketball Association is making a foray into this brave new world. At a virtual press conference today (pictured above), a virtual David Stern announced that there would now be "virtual versions of the NBA Jam Session, NBA Store and a typical NBA arena."
There are like a million jokes or sociological observations I could make right now, but I'm a little too creeped out to do much of anything. I consider myself a devout NBA fan, and I don't exactly like knowing that this is a part of my demographic's possible interests.
