Odd report by the New York Post this morning: Jeff Van Gundy is done with coaching for a while.ESPN backs it up with some pondering of JVG's future in Houston, stemming from a noncommittal comment the coach made after the crushing Game 7 loss Saturday:
"All that stuff about next year is for another time."Van Gundy's contract is up, and with the team the Rockets have built, Van Gundy makes sense more than anyone else. It's a defensive team through and through. There's probably not a better defensive coach than Van Gundy out there. But with Daryl Morey -- the league's first 'Moneyball' general manager -- taking over, the franchise might want to install new decision-makers on the court. A young, impressionable coach might make sense as Morey molds the ultimately disappointing Rox into a contender.
If you believe the Post, Van Gundy is off the market, satisfied to rest. But I don't. Guys like Van Gundy don't leave the coaching ranks like this. That job in Sacramento is an intriguing match, and one which will get significant press this week.
