Sports fans know Gene Washington as the guy who announces the picks from the podium on the second day of the NFL draft. He was also a receiver for the 49ers. And his name made an appearance on the guest list of the state dinner for Queen Elizabeth II:
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Gene A. Washington, director of football operations, National Football League (guest).

Yes, Washington was Rice's guest (date?) to the state dinner. It turns out Washington is one of a handful of past and present football players who have been spotted with Rice. Reggie Bush was Rice's guest at the White House Correspondents Dinner. And this article about Rice says she used to date former Denver Broncos kick returner Rick Upchurch, adding:
She was disappointed when a Middle East mission this year forced her to miss the Super Bowl kickoff for the first time since the Super Bowl began way back in 1967, though she did tape it. She is attracted both to the warlike tactics of the game and to the players.

I'm not sure how to feel about the fact that she's attracted to the warlike tactics of the game, but I guess it's good for the NFL that it has friends in such high places.
