Doc Rivers Gets an Extension

In the most bizarre and unnerving show of faith in a coach since... March, the Celtics gave Doc Rivers a $5 million extension that will keep him in Boston through the 2008-09.

Apparently, Celtics brass wanted to avoid sending Doc Rivers into full-blown lame duck status to begin next season... because we all know how terrible being a lame duck was for fellow Atlantic coach Sam Mitchell. In fact, Isiah Thomas was a lame duck all season, and he had his team of limited talent knocking on the playoffs door. Then he got his extension, thus removing his lame duck status... and immediately sending the Knicks into the tank. Yeah, lame duck status should definitely be avoided.

It's especially absurd considering the sheer number of quality candidates out there right now. Need offense? Rick Adelman and Marc Iavaroni are out there. Defense? There's Rick Carlisle and the Van Gundys. A young up-and-comer? Mario Elie, Sam Vincent, and Reggie Theus. An old hand with instant credibility? Paul Silas. There's a metric ton of great candidates to look at... but the Celtics would rather stick with a guy who's proven his worth to the tune of 24 wins.

Don't worry -- I'm sure the Celtics will learn their lesson when they get to eat that $5 million next December when they have no choice but to fire Doc.
