NASCAR Kicks Johnny Benson's Truck Team Out for Unlicensed Driver

...whaaaaaat?

Somehow, during Thursday night's NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series practice session at Lowe's Motor Speedway, NASCAR let an unlicensed driver out on the track in Johnny Benson's No. 23 truck.

We're not talking like a state driver's license, but rather a driver who hasn't been graded or passed any of the sanctioning body's requirements to race in the series.

The whole incident happened when the guy driving the Toyota Tundra race truck, who we'll refer to as John Doe from now on, crashed during Thursday night's test session in turn 2. Unable to continue, Doe climbed from the damaged vehicle for his trip to infield care center.

That's where things got a little bit fishy.
The responders and NASCAR officials in the area were expecting to find Johnny Benson, because, well, he has his name on the roof of the truck and generally drives them. Like, 99.9% of the time.

NASCAR must've caught on quickly at that point because the Bill Davis Racing team was kicked out of the test and wasn't allowed back for today's session.

Ouch. That definitely hurts because a lot of the tracks that the truck series competes on are 1.5 milers.

Anyways, everyone seems to be keeping pretty mum about the whole incident -- including the people at the infield care center who cited privacy laws for not releasing Doe's name. I think the important questions lie somewhere else, however.

Where the heck was Johnny Benson? Wouldn't he want to be driving his own truck? I know Tony Stewart likes to skip Daytona testing, but Johnny Benson is no Tony Stewart.

Also, how does NASCAR let someone they don't know on the track? Wouldn't other teams around them realize something was up when some other guy was climbing in and out of the truck? Could I sneak into a garage area and just jump in someone's truck and take off?

The whole situation is just weird, but we do know one thing for sure. BDR is going to lose some change in the pocketbook over this flap.
