For those of you unfamiliar with the clan of miscreants known as copy editors, they're the ones at newspapers and magazines and the like who sift through everyone's writing and edit it for punctuation, clarity, and a general agreement with the tenets of the English language. They also usually write headlines, which is easily the most difficult part of the job. But two headlines from the past week have me convinced that somewhere, an underground copy editor revolt is being organized. Their means of warfare? 6th-grade level innuendo. I'll let you folks decide which one wins for funniest/silliest/awesomest.
The first is from Charlotte News Station WSOCTV.com, and it's a doozy: 'Royals To Get A Taste of Angels' Colon.' I give it a 9.6.
The second? From Yahoo.com: 'Yankees' Wang hit hard by Rangers.' Also brilliant, though perhaps a bit too reliant on Wang, the veritable low-hanging fruit of funny last names. But because Yahoo also chose a funny photo, I'll give them an 8.9.
Bravo to all sides, and fair warning on those copy editors. They'll get ya.
NOTE: That photo isn't really of a bunch of copy editors, but that's about what copy editors look like, minus the ties and lack of Burger King wrappers strewn about.
