Life can be tough for a mid-major. Getting an at-large bid is tough if your RPI isn't high enough. But at the same time, when you are good enough to get an at-large bid, nobody wants to play you. Very rare is the established program who will play a mid-major. Arizona is one of those teams.
The Wildcats will have its own mid-major outreach program by playing Cal State Fullerton, San Diego State and UNLV this upcoming season. (Three teams, incidentally, that yours truly follows the most.) Arizona also will play Fresno State, too. The Titans and the Big West are a long-shot for an at-large bid, but UNLV and San Diego State (and maybe Fresno) certainly are. So Arizona should be applauded for helping out.
The most impressive thing is that Arizona will actually travel to play at UNLV this season. Be honest, you won't see UCLA rolling into Historic Titan Gym or the Thomas & Mack any time in the near future. (In fact, the Bruins threatened to pull out of the pre-season NIT a few years back if they were forced to play Fullerton.) But the Wildcats are actually pretty open about it, even playing a game at Cox Arena last year.
There needs to be more programs like Arizona who are willing to take a chance with some of the mid-majors in the region.
