A man by the name of Fred Marks posted a comment on Monday's story about
Giants outfielder Fred Lewis hitting for the cycle in which he brought to my attention a new website called
Black Out Bonds. The introductory paragraph of the site explains its purpose:
WHY BLACKOUT BONDS? It's hard to imagine anyone more controversial than Barry Bonds and cheaters never win! WHAT IS A BLACKOUT? According to www.Answers.com, a blackout is the act of turning off all the...lights...for dramatic reasons. With proudness show you are against Barry Bonds by wearing Black at upcoming baseball games in which Bonds is playing. We are turning off the lights on Barry Bonds!
So I guess this would be the inverse of the White Out by Miami Heat fans during the playoffs (which is a complete ripoff of Winnipeg Jets fans), but intended to have the same intimidating effect on athletes. You know who I think would love this? The players. It would give them a consistent background from which they could judge all balls off the bat. Personally, I think the idea is pretty lame. But then again, it's about as harmless of a method for fans to express their displeasure for Barry Bonds -- so as long as it's a non-violent display, I'm all for it. Think about it, things could be much worse.
