In Praise of Todd Bertuzzi

I know my Fanhouse colleague Jes Golbez has been pretty hard on Todd Bertuzzi lately, but a sequence late in the first period tonight in Anaheim showed just how valuable a player he can be, even if his contribution doesn't show up on the scoresheet with a goal or an assist.

First, at 16:47, Brad May was forced to impede Bertuzzi off of a faceoff in the Detroit zone, and May was whistled for interference, giving the Red Wings a power play.

Then, with only 10 seconds left in the man advantage, Chris Pronger made the mistake of weakly hooking Bertuzzi behind the Anaheim net -- something that very well might not have triggered a whistle depending on how your friendly neighborhood ref might be feeling at the moment.

Unfortunately for Pronger, Bertuzzi is something of a wily veteran himself, and made sure to tuck his upper arm against his side trapping the blade of Pronger's stick in plain view of one of the refs. Tweet, and Detroit had another power play. 40 seconds later, Tomas Holmstrom scored to make it 2-0.

Hate Bertuzzi if you must. Lord knows, I won't ever forget what he did to Steve Moore. But don't make any mistake as to why NHL teams import veterans like him just before playoff time.
