As a White Sox fan, I've been surprised by how well Ozzie Guillen has been able to keep his mouth shut so far this season. I know it's only May and with the Sox currently possessing the worst team batting average in all of the majors, perhaps he feels he needs to tighten his reigns a bit.Guillen's mouth is what I've always kind of liked about him, though. He may not follow the numbers enough for my liking as a skipper, but his mouth is incredibly entertaining -- even if it gets him into trouble sometimes. Sure, it's probably a skewed line of logic; I am basically applauding a guy for saying dumb and outrageous things, but it's just the way I feel, man. Sorry.
In any event, with the Yankees coming to the Cell tonight, Guillen was surely asked about Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez. Here's what he had to say:
"I always say Jeter is God," he said. "When you talk about Jeter, he's the best player in the game and has a lot of respect.Jeter is God? This is quintessential Guillen. His mouth may eventually be the demise of his tenure on the South Side someday. But until then, I'll continue to be entertained by the guy.
"When you talk about Alex, people just think about money, and that's not fair. This kid earns his money. He plays hard every day for his money. This kid prepares himself every day to earn that money. They say he had a bad year last year with 35 home runs and 100-something RBIs. I say, 'Wow, I wish I had one bad year like that.'
