ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports that the NFL's competition committee is likely to recommend changes to the NFL draft that would limit teams to 10 minutes between picks in the first round, seven minutes in the second round and five for the rest of the draft. If such a rule goes through, it will almost certainly lead to the next proposed change, which is showing the first round of the draft in prime time. The draft currently airs on ESPN and NFL Network all day on Saturday and Sunday, but a shortened and more action-packed first round, would generate better ratings and might move to prime time on network television.
I assume such a change would be popular among the fans, but count me as one who opposes it. I know it's long and drawn out, but I like the way the 15-minute increment between first-round picks gives me time to reflect on the player drafted and what he'll mean to his new team. I think my head will explode if I only get 10 minutes of reflection.
