Maybe if the charge were something less serious I'd make a joke about yet another player for the Cincinnati Bengals getting arrested, but there's nothing funny about this: Bengals linebacker A.J. Nicholson was arrested on a domestic violence charge, a local TV station is reporting.Taylor Mill Police Chief Steve Knauf tells Local 12 a woman at Nicholson's apartment told the officer Nicholson punched her in the eye. The officer observed the injury and took Nicholson into custody.
Nicholson is charged with fourth degree assault, a misdemeanor, punishable by up to 12 months and /or $500 fine.
On the long list of things I need someone to explain to me about our legal system is why it's only a misdemeanor for a 6-foot-4, 240-pound NFL linebacker to punch a woman in the eye. This is not Nicholson's first brush with the law: He was already on probation for stealing electronic equipment from a Florida State teammate.
Because of his character issues, the Bengals were criticized in some circles for drafting Nicholson last year, and after this, I think it's unlikely that Nicholson will be back with the team by the time the 2007 season begins.
